The world has mixed reactions after the government of Sri Lanka claims the end of a 26-year war against the Tamil Tigers.

As the government regains control of the nation, their first concerns are stabilization and restoration. We’re taking a look at multiple perspectives from around the world on the story.

Al Jazeera English gives us an overall view of the staggering number of people killed or displaced by this war.

“All told, 70,000 people have been killed in the conflict.”
“More than 11,000 civilians have been killed. The government military lost almost 4,000 people. It claims it has killed over 17,000 Tamils. Aid agencies said over half a million of people have been displaced.”

CNN takes us to Colombo for this personal perspective from an aid worker who describes the challenge for humanitarian assistance.

“Now it’s going to be about 200,000 in these camps. So, naturally, it is a massive challenge. We’ve working with government to ensure additional land is clear. And tents and shelters are put up. Also sanitation and water is available as soon as possible.” (CNN)

Across the world, Tamil supporters have been protesting the government’s proclaimed victory. France 24 shows us this view from a Tamil advocate in Paris.

“The Sri Lankan government is proclaiming victory, but where is the body? There is no proof. How can they say it’s all over when there’s civilians still stuck in the war zone?” (France 24)

The state run - TV station in Sri Lanka says… here is the body of the Tamil chief… along with an identification card… Tamilnet.com rejects this claim and says their leader is still alive.

Whether the leader is alive or dead… The Times Online says force and violence is not the solution.

“Unless the Government reaches out… to the defeated Tamils, the atavistic hatreds will continue and one day resurface in new war.” (Times Online)

Sri Lanka’s Daily News supports the government’s move to thwart the Tamil rebels and says the international community is wrong.

“Sri Lanka has proved them wrong and indisputably so.”
