Mexico, Costa Rica, and now Belgium.
After the 1-0 defeat, US coach Jurgen Klinsmann is three tests in and still has a goose egg in the win column.
Not only is the team winless in Klinsmann’s three games, it also managed to score only one goal in that span. But former US national player Taylor Twellman says it’s not the lack of goals that worries him.
“I mean the difference is, I’m not necessarily talking about goals, it’s chances, if the US was creating 10 chances a game, and they only had one goal I’d say ok fair enough.”
New York Times writer John Godfrey seems to agree.
“Giving up one ragged, abrupt goal to a talented Belgium squad, on Belgian turf, is certainly no crime. But the United States’ inability to mount a sustained attack may be becoming a characteristic after three games under Klinsmann.”
Some are being far more critical of the German-born coach, saying he doesn’t know how to properly manage his squad.
“Don’t get me wrong Klinsmann is a great motivator, who knows a squad with a superior fitness that is able to play a fast paced style of soccer over 90 minutes will most likely win at the end. However, he has no clue what kind of system suits his 11 players the best.”
While there are those who are quick to judge, Brian Straus of Sporting News is not one of them. He says - give the guy some time.
“There’s two home games next month, one against Honduras, one against likely Ecuador, you don’t want to go five games winless- that’s not going to look good. I don’t think anyone is panicking just yet. Klinsmann has made it clear that this is a long-term project. He wants to change the culture of American soccer.”
But is it even on Klinsmann? SB Nation’s Ryan Rosenblatt thinks people are pointing the finger in the wrong direction. He believes the president of the US soccer federation, Sunil Gulati, is to blame for coaching carousel.
“Gulati's head is on the chopping block and only one man can save him. Klinsmann better win when the competitive matches come around. He better live up to the messiah status Gulati built up for him because Gulati did what no sane man would do three times in a five-year period.”
