Are you the kind of person who has to control the radio on a road trip? If so, Turntable.fm might be the social network for you.
CNN explains.

“Turntable.fm is basically a series of user-generated chatrooms in which music is played. The inhabitants of the room take turns DJing, while other users vote on whether their jams are ‘lame’ or ‘awesome’ -- ‘awesome’ votes accrue users points, and, consequently, cachet among the community.”

The social network seems to be catching on too. Adam Ostrow of Mashable explains on CBS’ “What’s trending.”

Shira Lazar, Host: “Why are people so hot about this then?

Adam Ostrow, Mashable Editor-in-Chief: “I mean, I think it’s an exciting way to discover music. I think people naturally discover music from their friends and this service makes it easier than just about anything we’ve seen to date.”

According to evolver.fm -- despite the site’s name, selecting music won’t require a turntable or a massive record collection.

“You can choose songs from your computer’s own library, or from Turntable.fm’s own impressive collection, which fielded most tunes we asked for. And you can preview each song before it plays privately, just like a real DJ would with headphones, to ensure that you’re not about to embarrass yourself in front of everyone (with cross-fades, no less).”

According All Things Digital, however, it may only be a matter of time before Turntable.fm faces the biggest challenge to music start-ups -- legal troubles.

“The risk for Turntable is the same one every music start-up without label deals faces: Not that a court will find them guilty of something, but that they’ll have to spend a lot of time and money on lawyers. And while it seems blindingly obvious that Turntable.fm is a great thing for the music business … I wouldn’t put it past a label or two to gripe about the service.”
