Eighteen years in prison – and soon two of the Memphis three could be set free.

“The West Memphis three could be released from prison today.  These are the men who were found guilty of a genuinely a horrific crime, murdering three boy scouts in a satanic style leaving their bodies in a ditch naked and hogtied.  Later, however DNA evidence failed to link these men to the crime.” (ABC)

With support for years, coming from all corners the three convicted murderers are waiting on a hearing for their release.  The three men have some big names backing their freedom.

Last year – in a 48 Hours Mystery exclusive – Johnny Depp, spoke out.

“Reporter: Are you as equally sure that Jason Baldwin, and Jessie Mikelley had nothing to do with it as you feel about Damien?”
Depp: Absolutley.
Reporter: You have no doubts at all?
Depp: No doubts, I have no doubts at all.  No. No.”

But on the day of a potential release – the father of one of the victims – is also speaking out.  He warns if the men are freed-- it could impact future cases.

“I don’t know what kind of deal they worked out, what now you can get some movie stars and a little bit of money behind you and you can walk free from killing somebody?” (HLN / WMC)

“I mean what’s gonna happen? Everybody on death row is gonna have a door open now, to come out here back on us.
Reporter: So this is hitting you pretty hard?
Branch: Yea it is.  You know that was a jury of 12 people that convicted these people. Found guilty.” (KLRT)

Depp wasn’t the only celebrity to previously speak out, or help fund the defense. So did Eddie Vedder of Pearl Jam was inspired by the documentary, ‘Paradise Lost’, a film focused on the men’s innocence. Here’s what Vedder told Larry King.

“Vedder: We’ve got evidence in the last two three years, that we believe will exonerate these kids. ... It took years of educating myself and reading, and even helping fund new discoveries that allowed me to have what now I feel is 100% belief in their innocence.”

Now everyone must wait for the decision.  Expected to come Friday - a reporter from CNN was on the ground - reporting on the latest developments.

“They could go free today.  We are waiting to see what happens.  A couple of brief hearings; One behind closed doors, and then one in front of the public in which the judge will make the decision for the futures of the West Memphis 3.”
