We now know more about the alleged gunman in Friday's Marysville-Pilchuck High School shooting.
The family of 14-year-old Jaylen Fryberg has identified him as the shooter. This video was taken just a week ago at the Marysville homecoming football game as he was being crowned the high school's homecoming prince.
That scene stands in stark contrast to the scene on Friday after witnesses say Fryberg shot five students, killing one and critically injuring four others before shooting himself.
Local news station KCPQ says Fryberg was a popular student, an athlete, and a prominent member of the Tulalip Tribe — a local Native American tribal group numbering around 4,000.
It's that description that has many scratching their heads, asking what his motive could have possibly been. Multiple accounts from students seem to point to the same one: a fight over a girl.
A look at his Twitter feed depicts an increasingly frustrated Fryberg venting about just that. The tweet sent one day before the shooting read: "It won't last... It'll never last..."
Another student who spoke to CNN suggested the same motive.
FRANKIE PENYA VIA CNN: "Heard his like his girlfriend like broke up with him and I mean the tweets that everyone's been retweeting throughout the past couple of days of like their conversations have been like pretty brutal honestly"
Don Hatch, grandfather of one of the victims, told KOMO that two of the victims were related to Fryberg.
DON HATCH VIA KOMO: "All three of them are cousins. All three of them are cousins and they live right close to each other."
According to The Seattle Times, those two cousins are 15-year-old Andrew Fryberg and 14-year-old Nate Hatch. A student told the paper one of the victims was the girl Fryberg was angry at, though it's not clear whether or not she is the student who died.
