Members of the Virginia Tech community are saying -- lightening shouldn't strike more than once.
After a gunman opened fire Thursday and shot a Virginia Tech policeman before allegedly killing himself -- investigators are still on the hunt for answers. (Video from ABC)
The community held a candlelight vigil Wednesday night in honor of Deriek Crouse, the policeman who was gunned down. KIRO has more.
“He was a police officer on campus, he made a routine traffic stop around midday when he was ambushed by a man, shot and killed. Then a little while later, that man was found, he too, shot and killed. Apparently, he committed suicide. It was the same weapon that killed both men.”
Crouse was a married Army veteran and father of five. KEYE reports, he joined Virginia Tech police not long after the 2007 incident that was one of the deadliest shooting rampages in recent US history.
“The suspect, who was not involved in the stop - fled before apparently killing himself with the same gun. The school was locked down for hours... as SWAT teams and heavily armed police moved in. (nats snd of cop ordering kids) (cop) "Don't leave this room until you are told, do you understand?"(kid) "Yes, sir.”
It isn’t yet clear whether there’s any relationship between Crouse and the shooter. HLN has video of a student who says, she saw other officers trying to revive Crouse.
“The police pulled up and they opened his car door, and when they opened it, he just fell out towards the ground, and then they immediately started reviving him. And then two cops took off with some sort of automatic...”
According to Virginia Tech’s website, a memorial fund for Crouse’s family has been set up.
As of Friday afternoon police still hadn’t released the name of the suspect or a possible motive.
