The United States Marine Corps is investigating soldiers for their involvement in a video that appears to show soldiers desecrating enemy corpses in Afghanistan. A warning: The video might be disturbing.
The video surfaced on Wednesday morning and purports to show four U.S. Marines in combat gear standing in a semi-circle, urinating on three bloodied, unidentified corpses. TMZ, one of the first sites to post the video shares some of the details.
“The mystery person who posted the video included a caption that reads, ‘scout sniper team 4 with 3rd battalion 2nd marines out of camp lejeune peeing on dead talibans.’ … one of the urinating men can be heard saying, ‘Have a great day, buddy.’ Another guy jokes about the situation ... saying, ‘Golden like a shower.’”
The Pentagon was quick to denounce the video and said any Marines involved would be punished. Officials from the Marine Corps and Department of Defense sounded off to CNN.
“‘While we have not yet verified the origin or authenticity of this video, the actions portrayed are not consistent with our core values and are not indicative of the character of the Marines in our Corps,’ said U.S.M.C. Media Officer Kendra Hardesty.”
While a DoD spokesman told the network...
“‘Regardless of the circumstances or who is in the video, this is egregious, disgusting behavior...’”
The UK’s Daily Mail mulls the possible diplomatic impact of the video.
“The film is likely to spark a huge diplomatic row between Washington and Kabul and rekindle memories of the abuse meted out by American troops at Abu Ghraib in Iraq. … The further revelations are likely to make winning the hearts and minds of locals in the field even harder.”
The Telegraph also notes the soldiers’ actions could even be a war crime.
“Under the Geneva Conventions, the international treaty that lays out the rules of war, bodies of enemy soldiers must be ‘honourably interred, if possible according to the rites of the religion to which they belonged.’”
The second line of the caption for the video reads: “‘I thought Marines were supposed to do the right thing when no one is watching.’”
