Michael Vick says he’s getting unfair treatment from NFL referees. Vick complained about the officials after injuring his hand Sunday... but we’ll let him explain the grievance.
“Every time I throw the ball I’m on the ground, and getting hit in the head. I don’t know why I don’t get the 15-yard flags like everybody else do. But hey, I’m not going to complain about it, I’m just making everybody aware of it, and hopefully somebody will take notice."
Andy Reid announced Monday that Vick's hand is not broken, as previously thought, but still heavily bruised. Fox Sports’ Mike Pereira agrees Vick doesn’t get the same calls... but says it’s because he’s not the same kind of quarterback.
“He made statements after the game saying that he does not get the protection that other quarterbacks get in this league. Well guess what? He doesn’t play quarterback like other quarterbacks play in this league. There’s none like him that have his talent and his ability to scramble and run, and when you do that, guess what? You’re going to get hit, and it doesn’t mean that you’re going to be hit late.”
Former quarterback Trent Dilfer thinks Vick is imagining things, and points out he has bigger problems to worry about.
“Michael Vick does not have a case here. It’s perception vs reality. He’s not taking any more hits than anybody else is taking from the pocket. It happens all the time, it’s a subjective call, and it’s not happening more to Michael Vick than anybody else. Frankly, I’m a little disgusted that a quarterback’s going to get up there and complain about that after the game when the Eagles have other issues.”
Whether he has a case or not - Vick’s still upset. NESN argues the quarterback isn’t taking care of himself.
“Vick's stance is also more than a little hypocritical. He spent time talking about how conscious he is of his safety and how he wants to keep himself healthy at all times. If he really wanted to do that, though, wouldn't he sit out for a week after suffering a concussion just six days prior to Sunday's game?”
Over on NFL Gameday, Steve Mariucci thinks Vick’s comments simply reflected his emotions after the game.
“I don’t see a guy who’s right or wrong, Prime, I see a guy who’s frustrated... He gets a broken arm or wrist or hand this game, and all of a sudden they’re 1-2 and he’s banged up and he’s frustrated and he’s getting knocked around. Yes he is like everybody else, but he does get take more hits because he runs more, and so I can see some frustration. Maybe tomorrow he’ll feel a little bit better and say, ‘I was just discouraged because we lost another game.’”
Looking at the bigger picture, Don Banks is worried for the quarterback’s future, no matter who is to blame for the injuries.
“It's true that you can't change Vick's style of play and still expect him to be Michael Vick. ... But this much is also clear: Vick will never make it through the 2011 season at this rate."
