Here’s hoping you’ve been saving your pennies for the ice cream truck-- The Wall Street Journal is reporting Verizon’s Galaxy Nexus will go for $300 on-contract.
The article says Verizon is betting customers will be willing to shell out to use its high-speed data networks and reliable coverage.
And why wouldn’t they be? Business Insider says this sort of pricing is nothing new for Verizon.
“Verizon usually sells most of its LTE phones for $300 at first, including the HTC Rezound and Motorola Droid Razr, but prices tend to drop after a few months.”
In the meantime, paidContent says-- you get what you pay for.
“It’s an interesting experiment by Verizon to see if it can get customers to pay a little bit extra for the best-and-brightest Android phones. And if there’s an Android phone that can justify that kind of price, it’s probably the Galaxy Nexus.”
Indeed. The Galaxy Nexus will sport Verizon’s 4G connectivity, near-field communication, and, of course, Ice Cream Sandwich.
It’s got the $300 iPhone 4S beat, and that’s all The Verge needs to stomach the price tag.
“...it wasn't long ago that anything above $200 was considered overpriced, but Verizon seems intent on driving up the standard price by another hundred dollars. Considering the precedent the iPhone line has set, that seems fair...”
But if it’s just too much, as Laptop Magazine points out, you could just wait a while.
“... smartphones tend to depreciate in value faster than a Ford Pinto. So if a $299 Galaxy Nexus is too rich for your blood, you might just want to wait a month after its release for the inevitable price drop.”
Verizon has yet to assign a release date. Most rumors are still pointing to this Friday.
