A guilty plea in Peru. Dutch national Joran Van der Sloot - the top suspect in the disappearance of Natalee Halloway in Aruba- confessed Wednesday to the murder of Stephany Flores. He says he’s sincerely sorry. CNN has the details.
“Joran van der Sloot has pleaded guilty to all charges against him in the killing of a Peruvian woman. The 24-year-old Dutch national faces a sentence of 30 years in prison."
Van der Sloot claims that he killed Flores in a fit of rage brought on by the stress of his connection with the Holloway case, blaming the media for his state of mind. On HLN, analysts aren’t hiding their feelings about his defense.
"I have never seen someone using as mitigating factor the fact they were a suspect in another murder. Outrageous.”
But Fox News points out, whether you buy the confession or not, it may have been just what Van der Sloot needed to avoid lengthy jail time.
“This is widely seen as an attempt by Joran van der Sloot and his defense team to try and reduce a possible sentence. We are likely to see a sentenceing from the three women Peruvian judges Friday morning."
The confession comes a day before an Alabama judge will hold a hearing on declaring Natalee Holloway officially dead.
