The University of Southern California is cleaning house. USC has decided to return its copy of the 2005 Heisman Trophy won by then star player Reggie Bush. Not only that, but the school is now erasing every trace of Bush’s time at USC.
We’re analyzing perspectives from ESPN, the LA Times, The Huffington Post and Bleacher Report.
USC’s overhaul comes in response to a number of NCAA violations primarily surrounding Reggie Bush. The school’s president-elect C.L. has declared that the university erase all traces of Bush ranging from his jersey to pictures around the school. On ESPN Bruce Feldman explains why the Trojans are cleaning house.
“This is USC’s way of saying, look, you know we’re taking this seriously about what happened with Reggie Bush. Symbolically it is a strong message. I remember the day of the findings were announced, I saw people in Heritage Hall taking pictures of the Bush Heisman. And it’s a good thing they did, because it’s not going to be around any longer, and I think this shows that they’re ready to turn the page and move forward.”
Some have debated whether or not the school’s decision may have been a bit extreme, but an article in The LA Times seems to think quite the opposite.
“Bush broke one of the cardinal rules in college athletics when the NCAA determined he took illegal benefits during his time at USC. The Heisman Trophy is not simply about your stats and on-field achievements, it's about INTEGRITY, which is a blanket term for honesty and fair play.”
But an article in The Huffington Post says that too many people are shifting the blame on Bush, and that USC’s Athletic staff should be held accountable as well.
“...Let’s face it, if Reggie Bush and other players were getting their pockets laced... is it really plausible that USC had no clue... Now, USC suits want to act like Reggie wronged them and single-handedly corrupted the legacy of the school’s football program during his tenure. It’s just pathetic.”
A contributor for Bleacher Report highlights the school's hypocrisy, and asks what is really going on in L.A.?
“While Bush's Heisman will no longer be displayed on the campus, convicted felon and accused murderer O.J. Simpson's award remains. Wrap your head around that for a second. Simpson, who should be studied rather than honored, has done unspeakable things in his lifetime — but the key is that he didn't do anything to harm the USC athletic program.”
So what do you think? Is erasing Reggie Bush from the history books going to far, or was it the right move?
