They flipped the script -- that’s how analysts are describing the U.S. women’s soccer team after a shocking win over Brazil in the World Cup quarterfinals.  Team USA tied the game with almost no time left - the latest goal in World Cup history.

Here’s how it went down. First - USA took the early lead after an own-goal by Brazil’s Daiane.

Then - a penalty that gets American Rachel Buehler (like Ferris) a red card.

The resulting penalty kick - and its redo - got some questions from ESPN analysts.

“Hope Solo with the save! But immediately it becomes apparent - cutting the celebration short - there’s going to be a re-kick taken. Was it encroachment?”

“It is encroachment by the exact law. I’ve never seen it called that tightly.”

And finally- Brazilian star Marta scores in extra time - making the game seem well - over.

A blogger for the Fayetteville Observer says as the game clock ticked on, he was about to shut the book.

“I was ready to write a different blog post. One raging at the sorry state of officiating in FIFA, the injustice of how an American side can be bounced from a tournament by not one, but two bogus goals or the fact that [the] Australian referee ... seemed to have a wager on Brazil reaching the semifinals.”

But that was before this play -- a cross from midfielder Megan Rapinoe to seasoned player Abby Wambach -- who scored what’s being called the miracle goal.

“Second minute into extended time! Comes and misses -- she’s known to do this. And Abby, without flinching -- what a goal!” (ESPN)

A writer for Sports Illustrated says -- that goal -- will go down in history.

“Give the U.S. a tremendous amount of credit for continuing to play after a series of poor referee decisions had impacted the game in the second half. Lesser teams would have thrown tantrums and blamed the officiating, but the U.S. showed a tremendous amount of character -- and it paid off in the end.”

The game - now at 2-2 - went into penalty kicks -- where the USA came out on top - thanks to stellar goalkeeping by Hope Solo.

Here’s what Wambach had to say about the match.

“That is a perfect example of what this country is about. What the history of this team has always meant. Never give up. We never gave up. Brazil is a great team. I don’t really have many words for this. It’s unbelievable.” (Sporting News)

USA now heads into the semifinals, where they’ll face France to get to the championship match.
