A United Nations report leaked to The New York Times Thursday says Israel’s blockade in Gaza last year -- was legal and appropriate, but its force against six Turkish flotillas was quote “excessive and unreasonable.”
The New York Times reports... “Israel says it is willing to express regret and pay compensation. But the Turks want a full apology. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of Israel believes that apologizing would demoralize his citizens and broadcast a message of weakness.”
Israel’s refusal to apologize has led to a round of diplomatic tit-for-tat between the two countries. Ankara has expelled the Israeli ambassador and has withdrawn Turkish diplomats from Israel. Military agreements between the two countries have also beeh suspended.
EuroNews has an excerpt from the Turkish Foreign Minister’s speech.
“We’ve reached a point where Israel has used up all the chances we’ve offered. It’s now time for the Israeli government to pay a price for seeing itself above the law and performing illegitimate actions with any human conscious. And this price is to be deprived of Turkey's friendship.”
A diplomatic columnist tells Voice of America the event would change Turkey’s military strategy and have impact on other groups in Gaza.
“It does suggest that the Turkish navy will be patrolling the area and obviously against Israeli ships. Some groups may decide to force the blockade, relying on Turkish intervention.”
And as The Wall Street Journal points out, the problems between the two one-time allies did not grow overnight.
“Many of the training exercises and other aspects of the military relationship had frozen already, as relations between the two countries progressively soured since Israel invaded Gaza in late 2008. The main impact of the suspension is likely to be felt on weapons transfers.”
