According to the United Arab Emirates’ highest court – It’s perfectly legal for a man to beat his wife and child... as long as no physical evidence can be seen.

First we turn to MSNBC with the details on this Islamic law.

“...a man can beat his wife and children as long as he has first tried unsuccessfully to discipline them by admonishing and then abstaining from sexual relations with his wife. Islamic scholars don't agree on the definition of ‘beating’ but they do agree that it should not be too severe.”

MSNBC reports the United Arab Emirates Federal Supreme Court reached this decision after a man kicked his wife and slapped his daughter...leaving physical evidence behind. The court determined the man overstepped his rights.

The Telegraph talked to the head of Sharia Studies at Baghdad University-- who says a beating should be used as a substitute to resorting to the police.

“[He says] ‘If a wife committed something wrong, a husband can report her to police...but sometimes she does not do a serious thing or he does not want to let others know; when it is not good for the family. In this case, hitting is a better option.’”

Memri TV interviewed a man who says all the guidelines on how to beat a woman actually show her respect.

“There is a beating etiquette. If he beats her to discipline her, he must not raise his hand high. He must beat her from chest level. All these things honor the woman. She is in need of discipline.”

A blogger for Anushay’s Point is disgusted-- and says a country that alienates half its population is doomed to fall back in to the Stone Age.

“Somebody needs to let the Emirs of the Emirates know that it is not okay to beat women and children, and it is especially not okay to make the act legal. Somebody also needs to let the Emirs know that the progress of a society is heavily tied to the progress of its women.”

The Associated Press reports that Islamic code prevents men from beating their children once they reach adulthood.
