A late November incident involving NATO forces near the Afghan-Pakistan border left 24 Pakistani soldiers dead. Now. U.S. personnel are evacuating the country as relations tense.

According to the Telegraph, the attacks were the result of mistaken coordinates given to U.S. soldiers who were attempting to attack Taliban members in Afghanistan. On Saturday, a Pakistani military official told the paper:

“‘The strike had begun before we realised the target was a border post,’ he said. ‘The Americans say we gave them clearance but they gave us the wrong information.’ American officers have not disputed the Pakistani account of what went wrong.”

Pakistan immediately cut off supplies to NATO forces and demanded U.S. forces stationed at Shamsi air base vacate. Fox News reports it seem Pakistan is making good on those threats.

“That blast has sparked protests across the country. Meanwhile, Fox News has confirmed that U.S. personnel are indeed now vacating the Shamsi air base in Pakistan. The country’s government had ordered the U.S. government to leave after that NATO strike.”

Time magazine columnist Joe Klein told NBC’s Chris Matthews that an apology or admittance of guilt from President Obama to Pakistan is not likely -- even if it would help relations.

“The reason why he is not apologizing is because Pakistan fired on our troops first.”

But Pakistan argues that it was NATO forces who initiated. India’s NewsX spoke with Pakistan’s General Ashfaq Kayani, who said he is prepared to for future fights.

“Be assured, we will not let the aggressor walk away easily. Any act of aggression by NATO will be responded with full force, regardless of the cost and consequences”

But on Sunday, Pakistani Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani told CNN that he wants to maintain relations with the United States -- as long as the U.S respects Pakistani sovereignty.

“‘If I can't protect the sovereignty of my country, how can we say that this is mutual respect and mutual interest?’ Gilani asked rhetorically.”

U.S. troops have been instructed to leave the Shamsi base by Dec. 11.
