A big change in the world of babies... and it doesn’t involve diapers!
Census results show for the first time minority babies born in the U.S. outnumber white babies.
So what does this mean for the country? WLS reports:
“Analysts say this data signals a changing social order. Racial and ethnic minorities will become the majority in this country by mid-century, and that could reshape government policies.”
Family blog Babble predicts a big shift -- starting with any institution immediately impacted by children. And twenty years from now...
“There is no doubt that we will see more of what is now considered minorities in politics, holding key positions in corporations and in our films and TV shows. Our melting pot will be even more mixed and stirred, to become one big cauldron of culture.”
Numbers show - white women are waiting longer to begin families -- but minority moms are having more children at a younger age.
“The change has been most pronounced in states in the Southwest, where fast-growing Hispanic populations have turned the demographic on its head.”
And one issue the media predicts will take center stage with this new generation-- immigration. MSNBC’s Ed Schultz argues the older, predominantly white population’s “fears” are about to become reality.
“Unfortunately, this is the kind of shift that causes fear among some Americans. Fear is about race and fear is about immigration. It helps perpetuate cruel laws against immigrants... (flash) Some people are afraid of change in this country but the truth is the only thing normal is change.”
Finally, CBS gives us a picture of the country undergoing change.
“Twelve states and the District of Columbia already have more minority citizens under the age of 5 than whites. Double the number of states -- a decade ago. Analysts expect 7 more states to reflect that changing demographic in the next decade."
