Turkey declared it has suspended all defense trade and military cooperation with Israel. The BBC reports-- Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan says...

“Trade ties, military ties, regarding defence industry ties, we are completely suspending them... This process will be followed by different measures.”

Notably-- the suspension doesn’t apply to general trade between the countries, which was worth $3.5 billion in 2010. The Wall Street Journal clarifies...

“A spokesman for Mr. Erdogan said the prime minister had been referring in his remarks only to trade in defense goods, and not to trade in general. On Monday, Turkey's economy minister had said there would be no broader trade sanctions ‘for now.’”

Tuesday’s announcement comes a day after Turkey called all Israeli diplomats to leave the country by Wednesday. CNN explains the troubled relationship...

“Erdogan's government is incensed that Israel refuses to apologize or pay compensation for eight slain Turks and one Turkish-American. The humanitarian workers and activists were shot dead by Israeli commandos in a botched 2010 raid on an aid convoy that was trying to bust Israel's sea blockade of Gaza.”

The Turkish foreign minister tells The International Business Times-- Israel needs to apologize or suffer the consequences...

"The time has come for Israel to pay for its stance that sees it above international laws and disregards human conscience... The first and foremost result is that Israel is going to be devoid of Turkey's friendship ... as long as the Israeli government does not take the necessary steps, there will be no turning back."

But Israel’s defense minister calls for self-constraint on both sides.

He tells euronews...

“...we should act out of our heads, not out of our guts on both sides and I recommend it very strongly both to ourselves and to our Turkish neighbours.”

Turkey says it is considering suing Israel at the International Court of Justice for imposing a naval blockade on the Gaza Strip.
