A West Texas parade took a dark turn yesterday when a train crashed into a float carrying veterans and their spouses.

“Four war-veterans riding on a float during a veteran's parade yesterday afternoon died. 17 others are recovering this morning. Dozens of wounded war veterans we're riding on the float headed to a banquet.”
(KRGV)

The event was honoring wounded veterans in Midland, Texas. WNYT reports the float was trying to get around the safety gates and lights when the train hit.

“A Union Pacific spokesperson says the train sounded its horn before it hit the float approaching a railroad crossing. The railroad also says the crossing gate and lights were working.”

Midland residents were shaken by the incident. KSAN has the mayor’s reaction.

“This may be one of the most tragic events we've had in our town and it's a sad day. I shook their hands and saw them personally, met their wives. Truly was an honor to be in their presence.”

The National Transportation Safety Board is investigating.
