Still haven’t done your Christmas shopping? Well, fear not! Toys R Us is coming to the rescue. Here’s WCAU.
“Toys R Us is keeping the lights on 24/7. Started at 6:00 this morning and they're going to be on until 10:00 p.m. Christmas eve. It is the second straight year the retailer has been open 24 hours a day leading up to Christmas. Toys R Us’ flagship store in Times Square has been open day and night since December 16th.”
That’s a lot of Beanie Babies -- or whatever kids are into these days. But, why go to all the trouble? KNBC explains.
“The main reason is there are so many last-minute shoppers. There's a new survey out by Visa that says 77% of shoppers still haven't done all their holiday shopping. Over the next few days on average, the consumer is going to spend about $300.”
And this round-the-clock shopping extravaganza isn’t just for kids. Here’s HLN.
“If you don't have a kid to shop for, 14 Macy's stores will also be open round the clock beginning tomorrow night. Some other Macy's will stay open until 2:00 a.M. Target stores are staying open until 11:00pm.”
And with Christmas falling on a Sunday, that leaves Christmas Eve open to pick up any last-minute gifts. Market research firm NPD group looked at the UK toy industry and found -- the extra shopping day could be worth a lot.
“The last time Christmas Eve fell on a Saturday was in 2005, when the market [benefited] from an extra £24 million worth of sales in the last week before Christmas. If the same happens this year, it will more than make up for the flat market during the autumn.”
So what’s the ‘must-have’ toy this year? Well, there isn’t one really. Which is creating a problem for both retailers and consumers. Here’s The New York Times.
“...most retailers are being careful not to get stuck with unsold toys. ... After loading up on toys in 2010, major stores like Wal-Mart ‘ended up with a pretty substantial toy overhang that had to be liquidated in the January time frame’ ... In fact, more than half of parents recently surveyed ... said they felt there was no must-have toy this year, and more than one-third said it was hard to find toys and gifts because nothing was new.”
While there’s no standout toy this year, among Toys R Us’ suggestions: Air Swimmers, Trashies and Lalaloopsies. Whatever those are...
