Outrage over health care reform is showing up at town hall meetings across the country – where protesters are yelling at Democratic lawmakers – the ones who organized the local forums.

Our analysis of media coverage shows the big question is whether the protests are legit, or if it’s just a political move by Republicans – and both sides are coming out in full force.

In fact, according to Talking Points Memo, one lawmaker even received a death threat, so has decided to meet with constituents one-on-one instead.  But a self-described social critic, writing on Examiner.com, says don’t take them seriously, the whole effort is laughable.

“Its now become hilarious to watch a mob a few backwood hicks disrupt a town hall meeting by screaming a few words (usually "socialist" or "lynch em") when average people are praying for some health reform or universal health care.”

“Do you think there’s a legitimate grassroots opposition going on here?  I think they are Astroturf… you be the judge.  They’re carrying swastikas and symbols like that”

That was video posted on Real Clear Politics of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi.  It’s words like those that have FOX News criticizing the Democrats’ defense – specifically looking at the latest DNC advertisement.

“This mob activity is straight from the playbook of high level republican political operatives, they have no plan for moving our country forward, so they’ve called out the mob…President Obama wants to do this in three months, it took him six months to pick out a dog...Was that the angry mob the DNC is talking about? Oh and by the way, was that man, who by the way is a registered Democrat, coached by Republican operatives? Of course not.”

Local NBC affiliate WKTV in Utica, New York – where one town hall protest has gotten national attention – looks at whether this ruckus during the August recess will really make a difference on Capitol Hill.

“An average of the polls for Congress’ approval rating, Democratic lawmakers have actually seen higher numbers than they did three weeks ago, albeit by less than a percentage point.”

So do you think the town hall meeting protests are a political strategy by conservatives or just concerned citizens… and have the Democrats fought back too forcefully?
