Tragedy in Nepal after a tourist plane crashes, killing everyone on board.
Fox News has more.
“A plane carrying tourists in Nepal has crashed while trying to land in heavy fog. All nineteen people aboard were killed, including 2 Americans. Those Americans, identified as Andrew Wade and Natalie Neilan. No further details have been released on them. The Buddha Airlines turboprop plane went down in a village outside of Kathmandu, it was returning there following a sight-seeing trip above Mount Everest.”
Euronews reports -- rescue crews found one passenger alive when they arrived at the crash, but he later died in the hospital.
“Rescue teams were quickly on the scene, but there was little they could do. …There’s no clue what caused the plane to crash, but helicopters could not land near the site due to the bad weather.”
Officials say they’ve put together a task force to investigate the cause of the crash. But an editor for The Hindu has the most-reported explanation.
“The south approach to the runaway was open. ...To give them more space, the pilot went too far to the east. The clouds were low because of all night rain. The pilot must have assumed it was just a cloud, but there was a mountain hidden. ...If you are slightly off course, you hit the mountain.”
And an aviation expert tells the LA Times, the plane in question, a Beechcraft 1900D, probably wasn’t the issue. A bigger concern is the state of safety regulation in Nepal.
“I’m not sure Nepal has the resources to invest or the technical ability within the government to ensure the system is safe... Those who use mountain flights take for granted that the airline and the system are safe.”
Euronews also reports -- the dead include 10 Indians, 2 Americans, 1 Japanese, and six locals.
