Briana KoenemanToronto's embattled Mayor Rob Ford could be headed to rehab, according to his lawyer.
Dean Morris said Friday Toronto's mayor is "considering his options," and that includes rehabilitation treatment. But he also added, "It's best if we hear it from his lips." (Via NBC)
The announcement comes just a day after a disturbing video of Ford angrily ranting about wanting to kill someone surfaced online.
"Cause I'm gonna kill that f---ing guy. ... No holds barred, brother. He dies, or I die, brother. Brother, you've never seen me f---ing go. You think so, brother? But when he's down, I'll rip his f---ing throat out. I'll poke his eyes out." (Via Toronto Star)
And it's only been three days since he admitted to smoking crack cocaine.
"Yes, I have smoked crack cocaine. ... Have I tried it? Probably in one of my drunken stupors." (Via The Guardian )
Ford has apologized for his recent behavior but has refused to take a leave of absence or resign from his position, though many are calling him to do so. (Via ITN)
Even his brother Doug told a Toronto radio station Friday that Ford should take a step back.
"I've mentioned to Rob maybe go away for a week, couple weeks, get your mind together." (Via CTV)
But some time off does seem to be in the cards for Ford, at least, according to Deputy Mayor Norm Kelly. He told CBC: "We're hearing that he's prepared to take some downtime, not as much as people would like ... but even this incremental step indicates progress. I'd rather have that than nothing."
Toronto has no requirement for the forced removal of a mayor from office unless he or she was convicted or jailed for a crime. Police have not charged Ford with anything, and he has said he plans to run for re-election next year.
