President Obama will hold a press conference Wednesday afternoon. A few days ago, the fiscal cliff would’ve been the dominant topic. But many are now predicting the Petraeus scandal will move to the forefront. CNN’s White House correspondent referred to Tuesday’s White House press briefing.

“ … you can see almost all of the questions revolved around this scandal. … Jay Carney, the White House Press Secretary was downplaying that this was a distraction, saying the president is still very much focused on the fiscal cliff.”

The head of the U.S. military in Afghanistan who has been implicated in the Petraeus scandal is in career limbo. Gen. John Allen was scheduled to be confirmed as NATO Supreme Allied Commander in Europe tomorrow. Fox News reports.

“His nomination has been put on ice. Allen says he did not have an affair with Mrs. Kelley. And at this point, the secretary of defense is going to wait to pass public judgment.”

Tampa socialite, Jill Kelley, is also part of the Petraeus investigation. The latest report from HLN says Kelley requested diplomatic protection.

“Kelley is the one who told the FBI that she got threatening emails that ended up being from Petraeus’s mistress. This week, she called 911 at least five times saying that there were some people on her property.”

Workers throughout Europe are demonstrating against austerity and unemployment. According to the BBC, the protests broke out a day before the official start of planned strikes.

“ … workers were already demonstrating their anger at austerity. Hundreds of people on the Italian island of Sardinia attempted to storm the gates of an aluminum factory.”
