Some schools are reopening in Newtown, Connecticut today — following last week’s massacre at Sandy Hook Elementary School. Here’s CNN.

“Classes are resuming for 5,400 students in the district, except for those as Sandy Hook Elementary.”

A new proposal in the fiscal cliff negotiations. President Obama is proposing a tax increase for families making more than $400,000 a year. HLN says that’s up from an earlier proposal of $250,000.

“His new plan includes more than $1 trillion in spending cuts. A spokesperson for House Speaker John Boehner says the offer’s ‘a step in the right direction,’ but still has too many taxes … ”

The chief foreign correspondent for NBC news and his crew have been freed after five days of captivity in Syria. Al Jazeera explains.

“NBC says Richard Engel was taken by an unknown group, but was freed unharmed on Monday. The network hasn’t identified the other employees.”

Six polio-vaccination workers have been shot to death in Pakistan. The BBC has more.

“This week, the World Health Organization launched a nationwide drive to vaccinate children against the disease. Now, the campaign’s been suspended in Karachi.”
