A caddie shuffle is shaking up the world of golf. Tiger Woods has found a new right hand man, Joe LaCava. But will they be a perfect pairor a duo disaster? ESPN’s Michael Collins calls it a good move.
“Joe LaCava makes a lot of sense to go to Tiger Woods. The two of them I think could be a very dangerous pair on the golf course together. Because when Tiger gets it going a little bit squirrelly he can look at Joe and know he will calm him down and give him what he needs on the golf course to start grinding.”
The once dominant Woods has been on a losing streak. He is now 50th in the World Golf Ranking. Hall of fame golfer Nick Faldo talked with Montreal Gazette about Tiger’s career conundrum. He told the paper...
"It's now two seasons. It's not like it's been two months. Two seasons of golf have gone by. He hasn't been in a comfortable mode for two years."
LaCava had been caddying for Dustin Johnson for less than a year before abruptly moving on to Tiger. So is everybody playing fair? The Telegraph’s Kevin Garside says no chance.
“Dustin Johnson arrives at the Dunhill Links Championship in Scotland this week the unwitting victim of the Tiger Woods effect. Despite his world No 5 ranking Johnson is no match for Woods in a golfing beauty contest and is looking for a new caddie after Joe LaCava ditched him.”
The public divorce between Woods and his former caddie of 12 years, Steve Williams, proved to be a blessing for fellow golfer Adam Scott. With Williams by his side he beat Woods at the Bridgestone Invitational. During interviews afterward Williams commented that it had been the greatest week of his career.
CNN quotes Woods’ gracious response
"I sent Stevie a nice text congratulating him on the win. It was good to see them go out there and play as well as they did.”
LaCava may be the push that Tiger needs to get back up the ranking ladder. The news of the move coincided with Sky Sports' broadcast of the Tour Championship's final round. Although it was Johnson's swing instructor, Butch Harmon, who broke the news, a writer for Yahoo! Sports thinks the timing is intentional.
“Tiger Woods is back in the news again. Great. It's just a shame his announcement had to overshadow some incredible moments that actually occurred on the golf course.”
