In a region some are calling the world’s central challenge to global stability, U.S. President Barack Obama announces plans to ramp up troop levels in Afghanistan.
Hello, I’m Charlotte Bellis and you’re watching Newsy.com. That was video from CNN.
Let’s start with FOX News, who has this summary of the U.S. plan for Afghanistan:
“The goal? To disrupt, dismantle, and defeat al-Qaeda. The president’s plan calls for sending 4000 army trainers to Afghanistan, joining the 17,000 combat troops, that he’s already ordered there.” (FOX News)
France 24 takes a look at how President Obama’s plan is different from that of George W. Bush:
“The main difference really is more focus on Pakistan. Obama says that the leadership of Al Qaeda has simply moved from one address to another across the border to an unknown location in Pakistan.”(France 24)
MSNBC’s Chris Matthews wonders whether President Obama has become the war president, providing this parallel:
“Those of us who grew up in the 60’s, and remember it, wonder, when John Kennedy became president, and saying we weren’t going to fight Laos, we were going to fight for Vietnam, thereby beginning our long involvement in that war.” (MSNBC)
The Sydney Morning Herald looks at what the U.S.-led force will face in Afghanistan…
“Taliban leaders based in Pakistan have joined forces with their Afghan comrades to ready a new offensive in Afghanistan, which will feature more roadside bombs and suicide attacks.”(The Sydney Morning Herald)
The UK’s Guardian reports one challenge U.S. forces will also face is an ill-disciplined Afghan army. Afghani military leadership had this to say about the problem...
“They recruited totally the wrong kind of men. They’re all stupid and ignorant. They’re a bunch of delinquents. They’re only here because they’ve been pushed out of their villages for misbehaving.”(The Guardian)
What do you think of President Obama’s plan for the war in Afghanistan? Is the global response positive?
