President Obama is calling France America’s “oldest ally”.
Hello, I’m Charlotte Bellis and you’re watching Newsy.com.
The presidents of France and America are getting global face time in what some call a renewed partnership.
But CNN reports that working with President Obama comes with a few requests:
“The president is asking for more from his European allies. He realized that’s not necessarily gonna come in the form of more troops per se, but civilian support, money additional resources.” (CNN)
MSNBC says President Obama took that message to 4-thousand people in a town hall-style meeting in Strasbourg, France.
“Rousing, raucous cheers greeted the American president and you can see the sheer joy on the people’s faces gathered here. I mean there’s real excitement to listening to what the U.S. President said.” (MSNBC)
While Obama talks of global cooperation, a blog in the UK’s Financial Times suggests Sarkozy is taking credit for G20 successes back in France.
“It all fits the narrative of Sarkozy coming to London knowing all the arcane regulatory details, standing his ground and outwitting the capitalists and tax-dodgers.” (Financial Times)
Talks continue between the two presidents at the NATO summit Friday and Saturday.
France24 suggests that’s when the two will have to deal with another global player:
“NATO needs to redefine its relationship with Russia. The war in Georgia last summer widened the political divide and the time has come to heal the rift. But that’s easier said than done.” (France24)
In another move, France has offered to help the U.S. by accepting Guantanamo detainees.
So what do you think? Are these recent developments a sign of global cooperation or does it only have face value?
