The trend of buying environmentally friendly products has developed quite a bit over the years, but what does the term “green” really mean? There has been no stable definition.

It would be easier if being "green" wasn't so dang politically correct. Who doesn't want to be environmentally responsible? But let's face it: The FDA fluffs up on a regular basis. I'm not sure introducing the government is going to really solve anything. The only real solution, imo, is for consumers to take it upon themselves to demand and then read the information about their products.

A person who is truly passionate about buying environmentally friendly products will take the time to do a bit of research before shopping, but it should not necessarily be their responsibility to do this. If something is calling itself environmentally friendly, then it simply should be!

As a consumer, I can't personally tell whether a product is environmentally friendly by looking at it- not even by using or eating it most of the time- but I don't think that is something that is my job as the consumer. There should be a clearly defined standard for this labeling. Otherwise, what's the point?

I agree, I think we need a code of standards that probably has some kind of government involvement. Not sure about relying on a non-profit org as a regulatory agency. I think it's really insidious of producers to plaster a "green" label and then jack up their prices only to find out that they're actually not very "green".

I feel like if I'm going to be able to justify spending so much more money on organic food, I want to be certain it's really organic. I don't see how having some sort of government guidelines for what can be called "organic" wouldn't help.

This is horrible. We need a set code of standards to effectively control this problem. We need a government agency to certify these green claims.

I define "green" as being products that have been made considerably healthier and/or better for you and the environment. I make an effort to buy green items, but there are some things that I just can't make the switch to yet.

My roommate is a crazy greenie-- she even buys organic make-up that smells disgusting! I continually point out to her that even if companies list ingredients on the product labels (not that she reads them), production and transportation methods may be more hazardous to the environment and health than the regular stuff.

I understand that we are trying to move towards a more eco-friendly way of living, but shouldn't there be more transparency and certification of such products?
