North Korea’s Central News Agency announces what it calls a leaping advance in technology, saying its recent rocket launch symbolizes a “great revolutionary surge.”

Hi, I’m Charlotte Bellis and you’re watching Newsy.com.

FOX News talked with an analyst who says the launch has only one dangerous consequence:

“This is a product demonstration to potential buyers. North Korea has sold—it has nothing else to sell. It doesn’t have natural resources, it doesn’t make stuff anyone else in the world wants to buy except nuclear weapons and missiles.” (FOX News)

Voice of America and the Washington Times suggest that’s why U.S. President Barack Obama and French President Nicolas Sarkozy are now turning their attention toward Iran:

“Speaking in French Mr. Sarkozy spoke about the need to prevent Iran from developing nuclear weapons, saying the last thing the world needs is a new Cold War. Mr. Obama echoed those sentiments.” (Voice of America)

“President Obama set a new goal for nuclear powers to reduce their own weapons and also keep them from getting in hands of terrorist groups. The President spoke just hours after NK launched a missile that could be used to launch a nuclear warhead.” (Washington Times)

Many global media outlets are reporting representatives to the U.N. Security Council could not agree on a response after an emergency meeting.

The BBC highlights two opposite reactions to the rocket launch from the U.N. ambassador from Japan and a North Korean diplomat:

“(Japan:)It’s going to be potentially great danger for global peace in terms of non-proliferation. It’s not simply Japan’s problem. And I think that’s a point shared by many people. (Reporter:)But on the streets of NY a NK diplomat was dismissive. (NK:)Every country has the right to launch satellites.” (BBC)

The UK’s Made in England and Russia Today bring us two perspectives on China’s support for North Korea.

“China’s ambassador appealed for calm. We are now in a sensitive moment. Our position is all countries should show restraint and refrain from taking actions that might lead to increased tension.” (Made in England)

“Some analysts are saying one of the things it may fear is that too much pressure from the international community could lead to possibly a collapse of the regime which would in the end lead to more refugees fleeing to its borders, which would be a problem for China.” (Russia Today)

What do you think is the appropriate global response to North Korea’s rocket launch? What threat, if any, does it pose to the global community?
