Eight years on and for many the memories of 9/11 are still raw.

“Even though a piece of us keeps waiting for you to walk through the door it gives us comfort to know that you are truly home. Keep watching over us and sending us those signs. You are with us. I love you, always in my heart until we meet again.” (MSNBC)

News outlets across America and the world remember the chilling events of 9/11 with stories of those who died and the ceremonies held in their honor.

CNN, BBC, MSNBC, FOX and the New York Times varied their coverage dramatically – from a status report on the war against the terrorists engineered the 9/11 attacks, Al Qaeda, to somber description at Ground Zero.

As the official list of victims was read aloud at the World Trade Center site, The New York Times live blogged the ceremony. At 9:36 Friday morning they described the mood as more reflective th- saying edge has worn off, albeit slightly.

“The huge construction cranes that loom behind the ceremony stage, testaments to the advancing construction of the new World Trade Center site, are not the only reminders of how long eight years can be. While the event has a certain somber rhythm — and some of the speakers have choked up at the names of their lost loved ones — it seems absent of some of the deep overarching emotion of previous years.”

CNN’s Anderson Cooper talks to Michael Ware in Afghanistan. They discuss the way the fight fight against the architects of 9/11 - Osama Bin Laden and Al Qaeda, has shifted in since 2001.

“That’s why America originally invaded Afghanistan way back in 2001 because Al Qaeda was given sanctuary here by the Taliban. America recognized that as a national security threat. Well that national security threat is no longer here – it’s based in Pakistan. There’s no Al Qaeda training camps and there’s very little Al Qaeda activity. The bulk of the day to day fighting, the bulk of the bombings, the bulk of the shootings, almost all of them are being committed by Afghan Taliban. So this war now is not so much about Osama Bin Laden and his Al Qaeda network.”

Moving on, MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow has a completely different approach asking – is it possible 2001’s terror attacks are being exploited?

“Sarah Palin is staying in the news now by using 9/11 to try to score political points against President Obama on the eve of the anniversary of the attacks. But that cynical faux patriotism is merely an appetizer before the main course of exploiting a national tragedy that this year has been prepared as September 12 by the sous chef of politics as performance art, Mr. Glenn Lee Beck.”

Glenn Beck’s defense of his 9/12 project? He says he’s honoring the principles that united Americans the day after the attacks.

“The system has been perverted and it has to be restored. Those who screwed up must go to jail and those who played by the rules need to be left alone to rebuild our nation. The answers have never come from Washington. We weren’t told how to behave that day after 9/11. We just knew. It was right, it was the opposite of what we feel today.”

To end our look at the 9/11 anniversary, FOX News have a fascinating flash back to that fateful day. They compiled a 20-minute montage of their coverage from that morning 8 years ago – here’s a brief snapshot.

“A warning to our viewers that this footage may be difficult to watch….Holy s***. I can’t believe this is happening… There was another one, we just saw another one, we just saw another one, we just saw another one, another plane just flew into the second tower.”
