Postal workers may soon get the whole weekend off. As CNNMoney reports, it’s President Obama’s plan to save the U.S. Postal Service from bankruptcy.
“President Obama on Monday unveiled a plan to save the U.S. Postal Service and its employees from insolvency -- a plan that includes the possible end of Saturday mail service.”

This plan will help to relieve the crisis of the $10 billion deficit the USPS faces this year. As part of Obama’s $3 trillion deficit-reduction plan, cutting Saturday mail delivery would help the USPS save $3.1 billion a year. And with other measures like selling non-postal products, $20 billion would be saved up for the agency in the next few years.(Video: CNBC)
But is this really the best plan to rescue traditional mail? Bloomberg says it’s a treatment, not a cure.
“‘I would characterize it as a moderate proposal, one that should give the Postal Service some running room but will not provide it with the full amount of relief that it truly needs for the long-term.’”
But the Washington Post reports the new plan has supporters in the public.
“… polling suggests more than seven in 10 Americans also support the change if it helps solve the Postal Service’s woes.”
And according to MSNBC, the old-fashioned mail delivery may be down, but says, it’s not out.
“There’s tons of value still in the advertising mail and packages. But is this value going to be enough to sustain the post office for the next, not next 2 or 3 years, but next 15 or 20 years. Is it time to seriously consider crapping the model? They’ll be enough. There’s no question.”
