“Your muffin top may kill you. The scientific research shows a bulging belly doubles your risk of dying within 10 years.” (MSNBC)
…but don’t think you’re off the ‘muffin hook’ if you’re thin. HLN’s Robin Meade says the risk goes up for muffin tops of all sizes.
ROBIN MEADE: “Having a muffin top could take years from your life! A study in the archives of eternal medicine shows that men and women over the age of 50 with larger waist lines had twice the risk of an earlier death compared to those with tighter tummies. Now, the findings held true even for people who are not even overweight.”
CNN explains even if you look thin, it’s the unseen fat on the inside of the body that does the worst damage.
“What’s problematic and what the study is really pointing at is something known as visceral fat. The fat on the inside of your body. I don’t know how well you can see that, but think of the fat on the outside of your body being a predictor of how much fat’s on the inside of your body, how much of it’s sort of strangling sort of your organs.”
A plastic surgeon and blogger for Hess Plastic Surgery says a person shouldn’t feel pressured to wear something that makes them look unflattering, regardless of what’s in and out of style.
“More fat in the waist area + skinny jeans = the muffin top. Now I’m not saying that all of these women are overweight. After all men do like curves believe it or not. But what I am saying is that just because a fashion is in doesn’t mean it’s right for every woman…”
The online blog SodaHead takes the research a step further, saying the extra fat doesn’t just hurt internal organs.
“...even if you have sexy legs and a taut behind, that extra belly blubber is still dangerous. Other research has linked waist size to dementia, asthma and breast cancer...”
And of course the best prevention for the dreaded muffin is simply conventional exercise and a healthy diet.
