“True Grit”, “The Searchers”, “Sands of Iwo Jima” -- names of just some of the movies where you’ve seen one of Hollywood’s most famous rugged masculine figures.
And that same rugged figure’s family is about to put up some his stuff for auction from those movies.
Here’s CBS with a look at John Wayne’s memorabilia.
WAYNE: “Somebody ought to belt you in the mouth. But I won’t. I won’t. The hell I will!”
REPORTER: “‘The Duke’”. That, of course, the legendary John Wayne and if you want to own the hat he wore in ‘McLintock’, you just saw, it's one of the hundreds of items the Wayne family will be putting up for auction on October 6th.”
And Heritage Auctions has a little more detail on what Wayne-fanatics can possibly get their hands on.
“Personal items include John Wayne's cowboy boots and cowboy hats; saddle and stand; personal correspondence with U.S. Presidents and Hollywood's biggest stars of the era; correspondence and awards related to his affiliation with the University of Southern California; John Wayne's driver's license, passport and American Express card.”
Ethan Wayne, a son and founder of John Wayne Enterprises, has over 750 awards, scripts, costumes and documents of his father’s collection--and he’s now ready to release his father’s memories to the public.
"We get phone calls here, not daily anymore, but certainly weekly from fans saying, 'How can I get one of your dad's vests from this film or these films?... People have been calling for 32 years. His films affected people and they have a personal relationship with the guy and they want that connection. I remember how important the fans were to my father."
So who’s up for buying some of the Duke’s stuff? New York Daily News tracked down a couple interested buyers.
One woman says... "Ever since I saw him in 'The Quiet Man,' I absolutely adored him... I'm looking at [buying] the script from 'The Quiet Man.'
And another adds... “Those hats are awesome, but I don't think I could afford them...I wouldn't mind getting ahold of the passport or the driver's license. I think I could swing that."
The auction is traveling around the nation. It started mid-September in Dallas and is currently in New York City. It will end in Los Angeles, then go online from October 3rd-6th.
A final word on John Wayne’s legacy -- he was voted third most popular film star in a recent Harris poll, behind Johnny Depp and Denzel Washington.
