A Texas congressman is threatening to impeach President Obama. Rep. Steve Stockman says he’ll take action if the president uses the power of executive order to increase gun restrictions.

“I will seek to thwart this action by any means necessary, said the Congressman, including but not limited to eliminating funding for implementation, defunding the White House, and even filing articles of impeachment.”

So why is Stockman worried about the executive order being used? A writer for Politico notes a recent statement by Vice President Biden.

“Last week, Biden said some of those restrictions may be achieved through executive order instead of the legislative process.”

That statement upset many on the right who are against an increase in gun restrictions, but some on the left are saying they should not be so worried. According to the Los Angeles Times.

Democratic Virginia “Rep. Robert C. Scott said concerns about administrative overreach were overblown.”

But The Examiner notes that if an executive order was used, it would not be the first time the President has exercised that power.

… the president has signed 145 executive orders. That’s more than any other president has signed in their first term.”

But if an executive order was used, would there be any significant changes? MSNBC commentator, Ed Schultz, says any possible ban on weapons would be similar to the Brady Bill which expired in 2004.

“These people are freaking out about a law already passed. Congress approved the assault weapons in 1994. The world did not come to an end, and the second amendment is still alive and survived through it all.”

Either way, a bitter battle is expected as President Obama is set to unveil, what he calls, a “sensible” plan to offset gun violence.
