It’s that time of year again – conference realignment is in the air. This time the speculation centers on Texas A&M and the SEC.

It all started with ESPN’s Doug Gottlieb who reported a quote “high-ranking Texas A&M official” had told him the Aggies were heading to the SEC and it was all but a done deal.

That was backed up by a report from the Houston Chronicle citing multiple anonymous insiders.

So why would Texas A&M want to leave the Big 12 just a year after the last conference shakeup. On ESPN – Andy Katz says it has a lot to do with Texas.

“Well I think it’s a move clearly based on ego.”

“This move specifically was done because Texas A&M didn’t like the way Texas was sort of getting favorite status within Big 12 and clearly the only reason the Big 12 stayed together last year at this time, was because Texas was going to do things on their own by getting their own network and by having things a little more advantage. Texas A&M didn’t like that they didn’t like being treated as a second child.”

A writer for CBS Sports sympathizes with A&M but says a move to the SEC would be awful for the Aggies.

“All of it is an insult to Texas, which has become so repulsively greedy and self-serving that it's about to lose its biggest rival … Texas A&M would be joining the SEC West, where it would have no chance. Finishing fourth in the SEC West would mean finishing behind Alabama, Auburn and LSU, which would happen almost every year. And then finishing ahead of Arkansas, Mississippi State and Ole Miss -- every year. No way.”

According to ESPN’s Gottlieb -- Clemson, Florida State, and Missouri would also be following Texas A&M to the SEC - A report which all of those schools have since denied. The New York Times spoke with a high-ranking SEC official who said the SEC’s 14th team is still up in the air.

“We realize if we do this, we have to have the 14th … No name has been thrown out. This thing is much slower out of the chute than the media and blogs have made it.”

But a CBS Sports blogger says -- who cares? Just wake us up when the bleeding stops.

“The Aggies will move to the SEC, unless -- of course -- they don't. That is exactly what happened last year when six Big 12 schools went to the 11th hour and the 59th minute before decided to stay put. It seems that no such brakes exist this time to slow the runaway realignment bus. That's what makes these times so wacky. Anyone can write anything on the subject and not be wrong. Florida State to the SEC? Why not?”
