Terror suspect Abu Qatada won an appeal Monday morning to avoid extradition from Britain to Jordan where he’s accused of plotting terrorist attacks.
The Special Immigration Appeals Commission upheld his appeal on the grounds that he wouldn’t get a fair trial.
Sky News has more on the decision.

“If Abu Qatada is deported to Jordan... any evidence used against him to convict him of terror charges in that country could be or might have been obtained through torture.

The decision came as a big blow to Britain’s home secretary who was fighting for his deportation.
And to add insult to injury, Qatada will be released from jail Tuesday.
Here’s ITV.

“They have also decided that because there’s no imminent chance that he can be removed from this country or reported, he’s going to be allowed to leave jail on bail.”

The Daily Mail reports “The cleric will be subject to a 16-hour curfew and will be allowed out between 8am and 4pm... Qatada will have to wear an electronic tag and be barred from using the internet and forbidden from contacting certain named people.”

According to the Independent, Qatada is considered one of Europe’s most influential supporters of violent Jihad and was once described as Osama Bin Laden’s right hand man in Europe.
Here’s the BBC.

“He became a preacher of formidable influence and is said to have advocated killing Jews and attacking Westerners. In a BBC interview in the weeks after 9/11, he praised Osama Bin Laden.”

The only way the government can appeal Monday’s decision is through the Court of Appeals.
