In an ironic and terrible story, a Chicago teen was shot and killed just hours after her sister attended a speech by President Obama on gun safety. 18-year-old Janay McFarlane was killed Friday while leaving a store.
Chicago’s WBBM reports it’s believed the actual target may have been a friend she was walking with in North Chicago. She was shot in the head. Police are questioning two men in the incident.
And the irony -- earlier that day, President Obama gave a speech on gun violence, paying tribute to slain Chicago teenager Hadiya Pendleton, who died days after performing at his inauguration.
And in the applauding crowd at Obama’s Friday speech, McFarlane’s younger sister was there -- standing right behind him. WFLD points her out. WLS spoke with McFarlane’s parents.
“Somebody took a knife and stabbed me in my heart and took a piece of my heart I will never, ever get back.”
“This is serious out here. This is very serious. And they need to change a lot of these laws.”
And, horribly and unbelievably, another teenage girl was shot and killed Friday night in Chicago.
Frances Colon was an honors student and had plans to go to law school.
As OpposingViews notes -- these deaths come on the heels of the city’s deadliest January in more than a decade -- there were more than 40 homicides in Chicago last month
McFarlane is survived by her family, including her three-month-old son.
McFarlane’s mother told media her daughter had been deeply affected by Pendleton’s death, and saddened for her.
