A teenager is in a coma after falling off his skateboard while videotaping a stunt for Anderson Cooper’s new daytime talk show. The boy was set to appear in an episode about the teenage brain and risky behavior on “Anderson.”
Now, many are wondering whether producers are in some way responsible for the accident. The Huffington Post reports:
“The producer from 'Anderson' allegedly told the teen to record ‘the crazy stuff you do,’ which could have encouraged the young man to participate in and then record reckless behavior.”
E! Online has the official response from a rep for the show.
“As part of our routine process, we ask guests for video footage and photos. We did not provide the family with a camera.”
But blogger for Mediaite says camera or not, the producers quoted “egged him on.”
“Cooper has regularly called out various media personalities to uphold good ethics in broadcast journalism; will he take responsibility on the air for this tragedy?”
An analyst on NBC says this isn’t the first time an accident has been linked to a TV talk show. He suggests maybe its time for some new rules.
“Even if it is legal for television producers to do these sorts of things, to encourage guests to place themselves in harms way, it’s not ethically intelligent. Ethics holds us to a higher standard, and that’s the standard that television producers should be following.”
There is no word on the boy’s current condition. Sources say Cooper is distraught over the situation. The Hollywood Reporter has his full statement. You can find that in the transcript section of this story.
