We’ve all heard of fans who worship pro athletes--- but fans in Denver might be taking it to a new level this holiday season.
WTEV’s Ryan Smith has the story about the swag that could cause a holy uproar among football fans.
“Tim Tebow-- a player most love or hate. Now a few fans are getting creative with the number 15 Broncos jersey and it’s causing quite a stir in the sports world. This fan is sporting a Tim Tebow jersey with a twist. This number 15 Broncos jersey now reads ‘Jesus.’”
This of course follows the trend of ‘Tebowing,’ -- taking pictures while kneeling in prayer like the act’s namesake. A writer for Death and Taxes Magazine says the jerseys have taken things too far.
“Tebow has always worn religion on his sleeve: when he was in college, he referenced Bible verses in his eye black, frequently invokes God in his press statements. There’s no word on how [he] feels about this new apparel, but many people, including self-professed Christians, see blasphemy.”
But a blogger for Cafe Mom’s The Stir thinks we all need to lighten up. No one ACTUALLY believes Tebow will be walking on water anytime soon.
“Tebow and his disciples have every right to reference the Son of Man whenever they please. It's not like he's the first celeb with a god complex. I don't particularly think [his] fans are breaking new ground here. Yeah, he's one heck of an arrogant God-fearing dude, but who cares?”
Well... ESPN’s Skip Bayless cares-- if it affects Tebow’s play. He worries other teams might crucify Tebow on the field because of the publicity.
“I think it will have a very negative impact on a guy who has enough pressure on him already-- down his best two running backs and doesn’t have much help at receiver against the New York Jets on Thursday night. I wonder what those fans are thinking. I know they idolize him, but they just made it harder on him.”
KTVQ notes though the jersey have popped up around Denver-- no word as to how many are actually in circulation. Tebow and the Broncos face the New York Jets on Thursday night.
