We’ve seen flight attendant Barbie, Beyonce Barbie, President Barbie, you name it. But check this out from WSET.
“From her pink hair and tattoo chest and shoulders. From her bright mini skirt and spiked companion, Tokidoki Barbie is creating controversy...”
Mattel partnered up with the Japanese-inspired brand “Tokidoki” to create Barbie’s new look. But mothers are not too impressed by her edgy, new style. Babble quotes one parent as saying...
“Encouraging children that tattoos are cool is wrong, wrong, wrong. Mattel why not put a cigarette and a beer bottle in her hand while you’re at it!”
But others counter her new look reflects reality. WFLD speaks with a Tokidoki supporter...
“There’s also mum’s out there who look and dress like this. There are mum’s that have pink hair and have tattoos, so there is big support in social media right now. Finally, a Barbie that looks like me.”
Is Tokidoki Barbie’s edgy look the biggest problem though? The Daily Mail says not by a long shot.
“Several pointed out that the tattoos were of far less concern than Barbie's unrealistic body proportions, and the fact that many celebrities had body art was likely to have far more influence over children than a single doll.”
Although the Tokidoki Barbie might be causing some parents grief, Mattel says the doll is not marketed for all audiences. It is being sold as a limited-edition doll at select retail stores.
