A tragic accident changed the tone of gameday Saturday, when a woman was killed at a tailgate for the Yale-Harvard football game in Connecticut. Fox News has the details.

“A deadly accident at the Yale-Harvard game. The game is being played in New Haven, Connecticut and police are saying a U-Haul truck entered the tailgating parking lot and for some reason, accelerated and crashed into three women there, killing one of them and injuring the other two. Now, the truck then rammed into some other vans in that lot. Police are questioning the driver at this hour.”

Here’s a look at the crash site at Yale’s Lot D, where police have now cordoned the area with tape. The investigation is digging deeper into whether alcohol played a role since the driver was transporting kegs of beer into the lot. The New Haven Register has an inside look…

“Sources said it is not yet known if alcohol was a factor in the crash.
  One eye witness … estimated
it was traveling as fast as 35 mph when it struck the people. "‘It was totally an accident. Whether he was impaired is another question.’”

The incident took place around 8:45 a.m. as tailgaters gathered for the 128th game of the Ivy League rivalry.  According to ESPN, “The Game” goes a lot farther back for the Crimsons and Bulldogs.

“So once again, a real world tragedy is the backdrop for a football game that otherwise would be significant to the alums and players involved. Harvard and Yale have been playing since 1875. Harvard has already clenched the Ivy League title, trying to beat Yale today for a fifth consecutive year.”

A false rumor has spread that Patrick Witt, the quarterback for the Yale Bulldogs was “marred” by the U-Haul’s accelerated path. But Witt played all four quarters of the midday match to a 45-7 game, Harvard. At half time, the spectators stood in respect for the woman’s death.
