Hello, I’m Charlotte Bellis and you’re watching Newsy.com.

After expanding their forces into the Buner region of Pakistan, 60 miles from Islamabad, the Taliban has announced they will withdraw from the area.

The move follows the Pakistani government’s deployment of paramilitary forces to confront the Taliban, but Times of India expresses skepticism that the withdrawal is real.

“No specific time period has been announced by the Taliban for the withdrawal.  Remember, two weeks ago they had made a similar announcement about withdrawal from key areas but no concrete action was taken then by the Taliban.” (Times of India)

Al Jazeera English reports that some have welcomed the Taliban’s presence in Buner.

“We the people of the Buner, welcome the implementation of Sharia law and pray for its success, and we accept this law by all means.”
“In the far-flung corners of this north-west province, there is no administration at all.  The police is corrupt, the government inefficient, no wonder the people are supporting the Taliban.”
(Al Jazeera)

France 24 looks at the government’s reaction…

“There is of course the feeling within the government that the pressure is mounting, but still, Prime Minister Gilani is downplaying, as it seems, all the problems.  The government knows that there is trouble ahead…” (France 24)

UK’s the Guardian says that while the Taliban are a threat, Pakistan is not likely to fall.

“…parts of the country have already fallen to them. But that does not mean Pakistan as a whole is in danger, even though there are fault lines running through the country, and through the Punjab itself, which militants are exploiting.” (The Guardian)
