On the eve of the 9/11 anniversary, Sweden gained some unwanted attention after arresting 4 suspected terrorists.
They were thought to be preparing an attack in Gothenburg-- Sweden’s second-largest city.
Here’s euronews.
“An art gallery in the center of the country’s second city was evacuated and cordoned off around midnight local time. A spokesperson for the Swedish prosecutor’s office declined to give any further information concerning the arrests.”
This would have been the second attack within a year for Sweden.
Last December, two bombs went off in the capital, Stockholm.
And some fear-- it could get worse. CNN quotes a government report as saying...
"While violence-promoting Islamist extremist groups do not pose a threat to Swedish society, they are still a threat to individuals and groups, especially in other countries… The most serious potential threat to Sweden is the long-term effects of people from Sweden choosing to travel abroad to join violence-promoting Islamic extremist groups…There are currently no signs of falling interest in joining foreign groups."
As to the connection if this incident is targeted as a 9/11 anniversary attack, CBC reports...
“Officials wouldn't say whether the suspected plot is linked to the 10-year anniversary of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks in the United States.”
But The New York Times notes-- even though details about the suspects’ identities are scarce-- Sweden has its own reasons to worry about terrorist attacks.
“The arrests in Sweden were a reminder of the anger provoked in Scandinavia over drawings of the Prophet Muhammad, first in Denmark and then by the Swedish artist Lars Vilks in 2007.”
