Reports say supporters of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad attacked US and French embassies in Damascus on Monday. Here’s CBS.
“Syrian government supporters smashed windows at the U.S. Embassy in Damascus on Monday, raised a Syrian flag and scrawled graffiti calling the American ambassador a ‘dog’ in anger over the envoy's visit last week to an opposition stronghold… Photos posted on Facebook show demonstrators climbing a fence at the compound and raising a Syrian flag.”
CNN reports --A US embassy official called Syrian authorities’ response “slow and insufficient.”
"We call on the Syrian government to abide by the protections required under the Vienna convention…This is an unfortunate distraction because the Syrian government continues to beat, imprison, torture and kill people who want to peacefully protest.”
And euronews has reaction from the French.
“France has summoned Syria’s ambassador in Paris after violent demonstrations outside its diplomatic residencies in Allepo and Damascus. French flags were burned while Syrian security forces did nothing.“
Al Jazeera reports -- The demonstrations sparked after French and American ambassadors angered Syria by visiting the opposition stronghold city of Hama. The Syrian government blamed U.S. Ambassador Robert Ford for inciting the attack on the embassy.
“The Syrian government called the visits to Hama interference in the country's internal affairs and accused the ambassadors of undermining Syria's stability… The Syrian government said Ford’s unauthorized trip was proof that Washington was inciting violence in the Arab nation.”
Ford posted a comment on Facebook criticizing Syrian government for using tanks and security forces to try to suppress protests. He said the protests haven’t been caused by the U.S.
“The people in Hama have been demonstrating peacefully for weeks. Yes, there is a general strike, but what caused it? The government security measures that killed protesters in Hama. … Hama and the Syrian crisis is not about the U.S. at all.”
