Holy smokes Batman! I bet this never happens to you.
Civilian superhero Phoenix Jones was arrested by Seattle PD on suspicion of assault.
“This video shows the scuffle involving Phoenix Jones, and actually posted the video on his Facebook site. His spokesman says he was trying to break up the fight, not assault anyone. Police, though, don’t agree. They say the 23-year-old was wearing a costume when he attacked four people.”
Jones has been a figure on the streets of the Rainy City for two years, known for appearing on the red carpet with Rainn Wilson for the premier of the movie ‘Super.’
New York Daily News has his side of the story.
"‘There was a person on the ground who was getting stomped... It was one guy versus what looked like eight people. I honestly thought the guy's life was in danger.’”
But Seattle Weekly notes, the group of people involved - and Seattle PD - have a very different version of events.
“At around 2:30 a.m. on Sunday morning, four friends left a … nightclub and headed home... According to a Seattle police report, the group was having a fantastic time, to the point that they began ‘dancing and frolicking around with each other’ as they approached their cars...”
And the Seattle Times has a statement from the local PD, saying -- vigilante or not, Jones’ actions could be considered criminal.
"It's fine if people want to dress up and walk around ... but our concern is when they insert themselves into these potentially volatile and unknown situations... If you're deploying pepper spray on people on the street, you have to have a good reason to do it or you'll be arrested for assault."
Finally, the Seattle Post-Intelligencer dug up other stories about costumed vigilantes getting into trouble.
“In one instance from 2010, police say a caped crusader dressed in black was nearly shot when he came running out of an unlit park. In another case, a witness on Capitol Hill saw the crusaders wearing ski masks in a car parked at a Shell station and thought they were going to rob it.”
The police report does have Jones’ real name on it-- but we won’t spoil it here. If you want to check out the man behind the mask, follow the link in our transcript section.
