“155,00 came out to see if Todd Pletcher can break that 0 for 24 streak, We captured this moment earlier in the day as he was testing the track, walking to see was there a bias was it playing fair, when you have Calvin Borel as your jockey, there’s always a rail bias.”
“Slipping through along the inside, of course! Calvin Borel and Super Saver.” (ESPN)
In a sport famous for its odds, jockey Calvin Borel defied them and won the Kentucky Derby yet again.
Borel is the first jockey to win the Run for the Roses three times in four years. On NBC, Borel makes a bold prediction.
“I’ve been very blessed, following the right horse at the right time. I know about horses, this helps me a lot. I’ve been here seven days a week watching horses train, I think this helps me a lot. This horse is peaking at the right time, you know what, I’m going to win the triple crown this year.”
Trainer Todd Pletcher's has been winless at the Derby despite having 24 starters prior to this race. Pletcher told Bloodhorse.com that the win filled a hole.
"It’s the one thing that was missing on our resume ... As far as accomplishments, there are a lot of big races and races with bigger purses, but I think everyone out there and my colleagues would agree the Derby is the one you want to win the most."
Super Saver won on a muddy track last fall. The Lexington Herald-Leader, Pletcher says he doesn't usually like sloppy tracks, but he felt Saturday — despite the weather — was the right day.
"Sometimes things work out for the best. I'm not a trainer that generally likes to work on muddy tracks or sloppy tracks. Obviously this race was run on one day and you've got to look at the schedule and we felt that Saturday was the right day to work."
The Derby is the first leg of the United States Triple Crown of Thoroughbred Racing series, featuring twenty horses in "The Most Exciting Two Minutes in Sports”.
Borel and Super Saver will attempt to win the Preakness Stakes and then the Belmont Stakes, to claim the Triple Crown, a feat that hasn’t been done since 1978.
But a blogger from Pennlive doubts he can pull it off.
"...is he Triple Crown quality? Nope, and the reason for that ... was the second place finisher today. That's the stone cold closer, Ice Box. That style will suit him well in the longer Belmont Stakes distance."
So what do you think, is Super Saver a Triple Crown candidate? Or will he fall short of the finish line?
