This Sunday-- discussion topics on the political talk shows range from the economy to the 2012 election.
First-- to the economy.
Senior Obama Advisor David Axelrod appeared on CNN’s “State of the Union” to discuss the President’s economic strategy. He said the plan shouldn’t be much of a surprise to anyone.
DAVID AXELROD, SR ADVISOR TO PRESIDENT OBAMA:“First of all these aren’t all new ideas... Some will be new. Some, we’ve already talked about. … In the short term, we need to do some things to accelerate the economy... In the long run, we also ought to agree that we need to deal with our debt issue.”
Axelrod also shared his disappointment with House Republicans who continue to reject the president’s call for increased tax revenues.
AXELROD: “How do you let 150 million people, working people in America, get a thousand dollar tax increase on their payroll tax in the middle of these economic challenges we have but you won’t touch a penny of corporate tax loopholes? You won’t touch tax cuts for the wealthy. It doesn’t make sense.”
But Republican strategist Karl Rove says -- the President’s strategy hasn’t helped so far.
KARL ROVE, GOP STRATEGIST: “When the president passed the stimulus bill he said unemployment would be six percent and five million more people working today than are. The president's rating and gallup on the economy is 26 percent. There is a reason why. His policies have utterly failed is the seventh or eighth or ninth time he talks about a plan. He tosses a idea on the table and included more spending and deficit and debt . The American people are fed up with it.” (Fox News)
Maryland Democratic Governor Martin O’Malley says jobs are the answer, saying -- maybe we should look to China.
MARTIN OMALLEY, GOVERNOR (D-MD):“I mean, you’ve probably been to Communist China. They are out-performing us as capitalists. They are investing in their country. They are investing in bridges, high speed rail, the things that create jobs, R &D. And if we aren’t careful as a nation, if we continue to engage in this sort of dismantling of all of the things that we used to do together as a people then we are not going to be able to look our children with pride in the eyes in our golden years.”
The 2012 election took up the majority of the Sunday shows debate.
Rove says Obama’s reelection chances -- are looking grim.
“The president is in deep trouble. He twice last week hit 39 percent in the Gallup poll. No president hit under 40 at this point in his presidency and been reelected since 1948. I don't think Barack Obama will pull off Harry S. Truman.”
But Obama campaign advisor and former press secretary Robert Gibbs tells “Meet the Press” -- he’s confident in the reelection strategy.
ROBERT GIBBS:“First and foremost, the president's not worried about his job. He's worried about creating jobs for millions of Americans who've been out of work for six months or two years or longer. …In terms of politics, look, I think we're going to have a very robust campaign. And we're going to have a choice. And it's going to be based on some very simple values. The question is whether or not we're going to go back to Wall Street and big corporations writing the rules or whether we're going to move forward and make smart investments and put people back to work.”
Still - the GOP field might not even be set. That suggestion from Karl Rove -- who also shared his thoughts on whether Sarah Palin will get in the race.
BRET: “...if you had to put money on the fact whether Sarah Palin gets into the race what would you say?”
ROVE: “I would put more money she gets in than if she doesn't because of the schedule in Iowa it looks like that of a candidate and not a celebrity. Her difficulty if she doesn't get in after next week people will say she will not get n she is getting to the end of the process. She has a robust schedule and the video on Friday that was released by the campaign or pack strikes me as pre-presidential.”
On ABC’s “This Week” -- GOP presidential hopeful Jon Huntsman had a warning for a fellow candidate -- Texas Governor Rick Perry -- who earlier this week suggested global warming was just scientists manipulating data.
"When we take a position that isn't willing to embrace evolution, when we take a position that basically runs counter to what 98 of 100 climate scientists have said, what the National Academy of Science has said about what is causing climate change and man's contribution to it, I think we find ourselves on the wrong side of science, and, therefore, in a losing position."
