This Sunday - more jabs in the debate on the debt.
HOUSE SPEAKER JOHN BOEHNER ON FOX NEWS: "I know the president is worried about his next re-election, but, my God, shouldn’t we be worried about the country?"
And emphasis on the obvious: time is running out.
TREASURY SEC. TIMOTHY GEITHNER ON FOX NEWS: “We're running out of runway. Were almost at the edge... I never thought they would take us this close to the edge."
A little more than a week until debt limit D-Day -- and by the tone of the talk on the Sunday shows -- lawmakers aren’t getting any closer to a deal.
Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner -- who appeared on three separate networks -- told Fox News Sunday...
WALLACE: “So you are saying the so-called grand bargain is still alive?”
GEITHNER: “I am not saying that. There are two approaches before us now."
One of those approaches -- negotiations between the president and House Speaker John Boehner. Boehner had agreed to $800 billion in additional revenue before talks collapsed on Saturday.
On Fox News Sunday -- Boehner told host Chris Wallace -- that offer is still on the table.
BOEHENR: "It may get pretty hard to put humpty dumpty back together again, but my last offer is still out there. I’ve never taken my last offer off the table and they’ve never agreed to my last offer."
WALLACE: “Your offer -- $800 in revenue and entitlement and spending cuts still on the table."
BOEHNER: “It is still on the table. They know what my last offer is."
Still - Geithner was optimistic on CNN’s “State of the Union.”
"It's unthinkable that this country will not meet its obligations on time. It's just unthinkable we'd ever do that. It's not gonna happen. You've heard the Republican leadership say that, not just the president and Democratic leadership,"They all recognize this is very important to do, so that's why I'm confident."
But also on CNN - Georgia Republican Rep. Tom Price tried to make the case -- not getting a deal and defaulting aren’t one in the same.
“Default means that you don't pay your creditors, and that will not happen. It cannot happen. It must not happen. We've got more than enough money coming in to be able to pay those individuals. The question is what doesn't get paid, and that's where the president has, I think sadly, put fear into this equation and saying that seniors won't get their Social Security checks or that active duty military personnel won't be paid."
And charging the president with not putting a specific plan forward -- GOP presidential candidate and media-dubbed “Nice Guy” Tim Pawlenty -- played not so nice in a jab at Mr. Obama.
"Where's the President of the United States on the most pressing financial challenges of our country on entitlement reform? … The answer is he doesn't have one. You can't find him publicly talking about that. He's ducking, he's bobbing, he's weaving. He's not leading, and that's not the kind of president we need, and that's why he needs to be removed from office. … … if you're the leader of the free world, would you please come to microphone and quit hiding in the basement about your proposals, and come on up and address the American people? Is he chicken?"
Finally - while both sides continue to talk behind closed doors -- White House Chief of Staff Bill Daley told NBC -- the debate itself has already done some damage.
"I don't think there's any question there's been enormous damage done to our credit worthiness around the world, the perception of America as a country... We had a chance, we still have a chance, albeit difficult because it’s only 9 days away to August 2nd, to really do something serious."
