Looks like Mark Zuckerberg is on a path to world domination. According to marketing agency iCrossing, Facebook will hit a BILLION users by August of this year. Mashable explains.

“Having passed the $1 billion revenue mark some time ago, Facebook is now closing in on 1 billion users. The company claimed 800 million users in September, so it’s not surprising that claiming membership of one-seventh of humanity is now within the social network’s grasp.”

And PCWorld tries to shed some perspective on what it means to have 14 percent of the world’s population in palm of your poking hand.

“With a billion users, Facebook would be third in population in the world behind China and India. It would have three times the population of the fourth place country -- the United States. It took the McDonald’s franchise 10 years to sell one billion burgers, but Facebook is on track to reach one billion users in just over eight years.”

So is there another social-networking site that can even come close to Facebook’s dominance?

Google+ maybe? It took Google+ only 2 months to reach 10 million users, a feat that took Facebook more than three years to accomplish. And due to the rising popularity of Android devices, Google+ is expected to pass 400 million users by the end of this year. But VentureBeat says that’s still not enough to topple Facebook.

“…according to a recent study by analyst firm Nielsen, Facebook’s application is the most popular on Android devices, falling second only to the Android Marketplace. The study … found that roughly 80 percent of these people are using Facebook’s app more than any other app on the device.”

An analyst for iCrossing, Gregory Lyons, did admit that Facebook’s growth had either slowed or stopped in early-adopter countries like the U.S. and the U.K. But PC Magazine points out there is still a lot more room for growth … About six billion more ….

“Only 3 percent of India's population of 1.1 billion and 16 percent of Brazil's 194 people million have joined the Zuckerbeast. To put that into perspective, Lyons notes that 49 percent of people the U.S. and 47 percent of people in the U.K. are on Facebook.”

A comScore study in late December reported that one in every seven minutes online is spent on Facebook.
