A controversial new study says women are better drivers than men. And if you look at the numbers -- women are better by a long shot. Here’s WJBK with some of the key findings.
“Some 80% of all fatal and serious car crashes are caused by male drivers. Statistics show women are 27% less likely than men to cause auto accidents...”
The study also found -- when it comes to drunk driving violations -- men outnumber women 3:1. The research focused on drivers in New York and was funded by an insurance company. An auto insurance expert quoted by KNBC says men are downright frightening behind the wheel!
"It's almost scary how bad the average American man is at driving … Blame it on whatever you want — high testosterone, higher propensity to take risks, or higher levels of aggression, but the fact remains — men simply make too many mistakes behind the wheel."
And on Fox News -- a battle of the sexes. One of the men on the show says-- well-- at least men don’t get lost.
“It's a proud moment for my gender. Thank you, study. Can you believe that?”
“My wife needs GPS to go around the corner to the store.”
“Ok we may not be good with directions.”
“You better hope she's not watching!”
“We're not as reckless.”
WCBS in New York talked with people on the street and found one guy - who says yep, women ARE the safer drivers.
Reporter: “Some women are now gloating over their victory while men just might be willing to give in. Are you finally gonna give it to the girls now?”
Man: “I am, sad to say, I am”
Woman: “Women are always right as well. Better drivers - then always right.”
But a male blogger for LA weekly - says maybe it’s just that some women are smoother talkers.
“Who doesn't know a hot chick who hasn't talked her way out of a ticket? It just doesn't work for us guys, even if we're wearing a skirt … And, frankly, men drink more than women: Not at a 3-to-1 ratio, but we think drunk girls can be just as persuasive...”
According to a 2009 report by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety's Highway Loss Data Institute, more men than women die each year in car crashes.
